Lymphedema is swelling caused by a buildup of lymphatic fluid that can lead to discomfort or chronic pain. This condition may affect different parts of the body because lymph circulates throughout the body to transport white blood cells, antibodies and nutrients.

At Laboratoire Orthopédique, we offer treatments to relieve discomfort caused by lymphedema in the foot and the lower and upper limbs, helping improve patients’ quality of life.

Symptoms of lymphedema

Lymphedema, a buildup of lymphatic fluid, presents as edema or swelling of the soft tissues.

Other symptoms may accompany this swelling:

  • Pain, heaviness and stiffness
  • Loss of mobility when swelling is significant
  • Tightness of the skin in the affected area

Causes of lymphedema

Lymphedema occurs in two forms with different causes.

PRIMARY LYMPHEDEMA

Primary lymphedema is rare. It is often present from birth or may appear later for reasons that are difficult to identify. Specific treatments are available to manage this form of lymphedema.

SECONDARY LYMPHEDEMA

Secondary lymphedema is more common and often develops after cancer-related surgery or radiation therapy. Patients treated for breast cancer are most frequently affected.

How is lymphedema treated, and what treatments are available?

Lymphedema treatments aim to reduce and control swelling in the affected area, often the arms, hands, feet or legs.

One key treatment is wearing compression garments during the day and, when necessary, at night to prevent and reduce swelling over time. These garments differ from compression stockings and support lymphatic circulation.

Compression garments must be prescribed by a physician and fitted by a specialist. The Laboratoire Orthopédique is certified to provide adapted treatments.

Massage known as lymphatic drainage can complement treatment by helping reduce swelling. Combining compression garments and massage may be particularly beneficial.

These products are recognized by the RAMQ and are often reimbursed, providing financial relief for people with lymphedema.
