Carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome causes pain in the wrist, hand and fingers. It is common among women between the ages of 30 and 50 but can affect anyone. The carpal tunnel is a passageway through which the median nerve and finger flexor tendons travel. Compression of the median nerve causes intense pain that may spread along the nerve.

At the Laboratoire Orthopédique, our specialists offer personalized treatments to relieve symptoms.

Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome

Key symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include:

  • Numbness and tingling in the hand, wrist or palm, sometimes extending to the shoulder;
  • Difficulty grasping and holding even light objects;
  • A burning sensation and intense pain, often at night;
  • Symptoms that worsen after activities such as driving or talking on the phone.

For women, carpal tunnel pain may be more intense during menstruation, pregnancy or after childbirth.

Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome results from several factors. Workers may be particularly at risk because of certain tasks:

Repetitive wrist and forearm movements over long periods
Movements requiring significant hand force
Strained hand positions
Frequent use of vibrating tools

Carpal tunnel syndrome can also result from wrist injuries or arthritis. Computer and mouse use is also suspected. Hormonal fluctuations, such as water retention during pregnancy, may also place pressure on the median nerve.

Treatments to manage and relieve carpal tunnel pain

Treating carpal tunnel syndrome requires resting the wrist. A physician-prescribed brace holds the joint in a neutral position during the day and at night.

In addition to foot orthotics and other orthoses, the Laboratoire Orthopédique specializes in custom wrist braces designed to provide better results. These orthoses may be reimbursed by the RAMQ when prescribed by a specialist and when eligibility criteria are met.

Pain may also be relieved with a cold or warm compress and with analgesics to reduce wrist pain and inflammation.
