The XTERN® foot drop orthosis from turbomed

Foot drop syndrome affects the mobility of people with this condition. Daily movements are more difficult, which increases the risk of falling, limits walkin
speed and endurance.

TurboMed’s XTERN® orthosis, offered by the orthopedists at Jerome Marier Orthopedic Laboratory, allows people with foot drop syndrome to regain a better quality of life.

Offering several benefits, this orthosis allows people with this syndrome to walk, run and hike without pain or discomfort.

The role and function of the foot drop orthosis

One of the effects of foot drop is paralysis or weakness in the foot lift muscles. This symptom is the cause of the mobility problems that result from this pathology.

The main role of the foot drop orthosis is to stabilize the ankle joint and the foot in order to allow a normal and safe gait.

The functioning of tibial orthoses varies somewhat from that of other external orthoses, such as knee orthoses. They must be able to stabilize the foot-ankle complex while allowing sufficient mobility to move without discomfort.

Among the different types of custom orthotics handcrafted at the Laboratoire Orthopédique are traditional ankle-foot orthotics (AFOs), which help treat foot drop. However, while these provide adequate support, they offer less flexibility than TurboMed’s XTERN® orthotic.

Attached entirely to the outside of the shoe, the XTERN® orthotic acts like an exoskeleton. It holds the foot at a 90-degree angle but does not prevent plantar flexion of the ankle or dorsal flexion. This makes it much easier to use and more comfortable than traditional shin splints.
