The role and operation of a foot drop orthosis
Foot drop results from paralysis or weakness of the muscles that lift the foot, causing mobility problems.
A foot drop orthosis stabilizes the ankle and foot to support a normal gait.
Unlike standard knee braces, lower-leg orthoses support the foot and ankle while preserving good mobility.
Among the different types of orthoses we make are traditional ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs). Although they provide adequate support, they offer less flexibility than TurboMed’s XTERN® orthosis. The XTERN® attaches to the outside of the shoe and acts like an exoskeleton, holding the foot at a 90-degree angle while allowing plantar and dorsiflexion. This provides greater everyday comfort and mobility.

Who is the TurboMed XTERN® orthosis for?
The XTERN® orthosis treats foot drop and dorsiflexion weakness, and may also help with various foot-mobility problems:
